Asian Tsunami - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #19783 36 posts Started by My94RedCelica
I'm sure by now you have probably heard about the tsunami that hit Asia. That's just insane. It's hard to even imagine 20 ft. waves crashing on the shore. . . Last I heard, the death count is up to 8,000 in six different countries. I just happen to check my email today and saw that and couldn't believe it. For those of you who don't really know how tsunamis work here's a quick synopsis. They are caused by earthquackes on the ocean floor. There was one that was an 8.9, the largest in 40 years. Just like dropping a rock in the center of water, it causes ripples. Those then turn into waves that hit the shore. Larger the earthquake, larger the ripples. When it first comes to shore, the shore line will draw in significantly, then the waves hit and brings the shore in. That's really the only warning that people get. It's a sad thing to see happen and definately one of the worst natural disasters.
Yes my friend,i feel very sorry for those peoples >mad.gif>

Thats very tragic, I haven't heard anything about it! I know alot of Asian countries have warnings and even structures built to protect themselves against tsunamis.

I dont think that explination is very clear. The earth quake causes a series of underwater waves that travel at great speeds towards the main land. As the water level becomes more shallow the underwater waves slow and are vertically displaced above the water line which is your tsunami.

very sad, this is the first i have heard of it.

to be clear, not all tsunamis are caused buy rocks or earth quackes, underwater land slides can make a stunami just as big, or bigger.

Ya basically anything causing under water pulses can cause them, meteorites, land slides, earth quakes, volcanic activity and so on.

And a 8.9 magnitude is just massive. Since every whole number on the richter scale signifies a increase in ampliude of 10, Im sure people who have experienced an earth quake could just imagine the energy. So for example a 8.9 earth quake is 10 times the magnitude of a 7.9.
I did not think the nuber was that high yet, but I checked out the news and it showed a bit of the coverage and damn >frown.gif>

you know what's gana happen now right, the bodies that where sucked out to sea are gana float in all over the place, thats just sick, and horrible to think about.

I hope that prez. bush offers help to them or atleast money.

I was in a 6.9 a wile ago (durring school my jr. year, i think, natalie probibly remembers too)

it did not do much damage but 20 times that, not twise as much, but 20 times, that is crazy bad. I bet that it did a number on the sea life in the area.
Incredibly sad. :\

YoungSurvival.Org-Celica traded for.. 350z.. traded for Mazda5.. soccer mom!
I heard about the 10k on the radio station. =/
My girlfriend's in Indonesia- in Sumatra. When I read this post this morning, it didn't even hit me to think of her. I mean, I just talked with her 8 AM this morning. Then I went through a panic when I saw the earthquake map; with the island of sumatra (where she's staying) as the epicenter.

It took me maybe 45 minutes to calm down, and realize that if I talked to her at 8 AM this morning, it was 11 PM Sunday night over there.. over 12 hours from the time of the quake. but still

that feeling

*sigh*

And from what I have read that while the magnitude difference in your earth quake for example is 20 times, thats the actual energy put out is something like 60 times greater! pretty amazing stuff!
I'm a big fan of Asian culture. It perhaps may be something that I want to major in college. When I first saw it this morning at 7,000 people, I was horrified. I immediately thought it hit Japan, Korea, China, that area. . . Instead it was further down, where populations are still dense. It just makes me want to do something about it to help them. Man. . I just have sort of that helpless feeling. Say if there were relief help workers that were going over there, and they asked me to go, I probably would take them up on that. . . I don't know. . . I just feel I the need to help those people in some way.
Well its sad and no one wants that to happen to anyone, BUT it is a natural method of population control. If it wasn't for events like this the world would be more over populated then it already is. so its kinda "the greater good" side of it. Hopefully people can stop multiplying like rabbits so that veiw doesn't have to be taken in the future.

Well thats uhhh realism. Something has to keep human populations in check, we are after all animals.

I never sad I like it, its just a cold statistical way of looking at it. Honestly I dont see what horrible about what I said.

What you said Uppity, was not exactly the most tactful thing to say. Just leave it at that. Any more bickering... it'll just show how small-minded you (both) are getting...

i cant believe after all these natural disasters killing thousands of people, there are still car bombings and US soldiers getting killed in iraq. i say we back off and let them kill each other and not our people. at least THATS mother nature to get rid of all the idiots.

i guess it just comes to show how in control of our destiny we really are. these were just people like u and i living their everyday lives, then bam, its all gone.
really terrible stuff. up to 24000 people confirmed dead. really sad....and we have members on this site that are from those areas. we should try to get in touch with them if we can. doubt that they got any kind of communication
