Hey guys, I'm in a pretty desperate situation and I was wondering if it would be ok to run smaller wheels in the front and the stock ones in the rear? The wheels are only an inch less than stock in diameter and they are about 1/2 inch wider. This would be for 2, maybe 3 months max. I really need to know soon guys!

It will throw of your speedometer a bit and your mpg will decrease a bit if the diameter is smaller.

Wouldn't it increase slightly since it's rotating less?!

I'm talking about handling, stress on the suspension, etc. More critical things then my speedo being off a little.

If the circumference of the tire was 2 feet and his temporary wheels were 1 foot in circumference, then the smaller wheel would have to rotate twice as much for one rotation of the larger wheel. His speedo would mark twice the distance actualy traveled. The rotation would be greater.

RPM is engine revolutions per minute..not anything to do with drive axles or wheels/etc. >>.

if the wheel is smaller it will read FASTER since the wheel it self moves faster then the larger rims

IF you measure from TIRE (not rim) the diameter, across the tire
and the diameter is the same as the larger wheel (thinner tires then the smaller)
then you should be good for the most part

LARGER rims make your speedo say that you are going slower

and it can effect your RPM just so you know....14" enkies i redline at stock factory red line

18s i redline before that by 400 rmp

but that is just the RMP gauge off.....i really am at factory redline but because of the wheels it reads lower

You are correct. RPM's are how fast the crank rotates per minute. I dont think it can cause your RPM's to be off.

aka crank moves tranny which moves wheels >> its all effects eachother and trust me my eyes can see my gauge

While the guage might be differen't (unlikely) there's no way wheel size changes can effect the actual physical RPMs your engine puts out. It's not like your torque curve or powerband are going to shift or anything.

Your handling will get worse; and you'll scrap on a lot of bumps.

Player, if its off the crank, then the size of the wheels makes no difference. The guage would simply be measuring engine RPM's and the affect of those RPM's through the drivetrain (tranny, wheels, etc) would have no effect. The only way it could possibly affect the tach is if the tach was measured off the wheels and then the ECU computed the RPM's given the gear and wheel speed. Even this makes no sense because you could rev up to 100mph and then take your foot completely off the accelerator. If it were measured off of wheel speed, the tach would not drop - which of course it does.

Wheels size does NOT affect RPMs... it does affect speed and speedometer/odometer. The speedo gear drives the speedometer and odometer, electronically or mechanically, both signaled off of the tranny so bigger/smaller wheels/tires do affect that to some degree only to the drive wheels. RPM is usually a signal from the distributor, crank sensor, or something on the engine, so RPMs will feel no effect from larger/smaller wheels/tires. The RPM gauge is not connected to anything relating to drivetrain aside from engine load.

Why don't you just run the stock tires in the front, that way you dont have to worry about throwing off the speedometer?
