What MAKES a GT4? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #18449 37 posts Started by shid
In the forum 3si.org (which my housemate moderates on) a very stupid and silly thread has broken out.

The 3000GT VR4 is almost the exact same as the JDM only Mitsu GTO- in USDM release Mitsu changed the name to avoid upsetting pontiac (as well as badging changes; different front turn likes and changing LHD and RHD)

However, people in the US who have done the conversion have started calling their cars GTOs- although their title says 3000GT VR4. Same engine, same tranny (some models of the GTO have different gear ratios- some)

The poster of this thread stated that he hated people who called their cars GTO; and that it will never be a GTO.

What do you guys think?

Thread here

So, what makes a GT4? I realize in our cars, we have the problem of AWD-

but if someone completed a full swap- AWD and everything (including badging)

Would it be a GT4? Or just a GT (or even ST hehe) in GT4's clothing?

I'm inclined to believe that it would be a GT4.. just not a very stable one >wink.gif>
i think it would be, who would know the difference? except the isurance compnay and dmv and such... but it'd be a pain in the ass to do awd :-/

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.
most swapers have started calling their cars GT2s

yea b/c their car is still 2wd wit a swap
but if u do an awd conversion, i would think it would be a gt4
then i would call it a "gt4 conversion", but it still wouldnt be a real toyota built gt4.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
i still would not call it a GT4 due to the whole Shell within a Shell deal.

GT2 fits it well >smile.gif>
I'd call it a clone! lol
I had a Stealth and was on 3si for years (batmobile). The Stealth/3KGT/GTO is the same car. There are only a few differences between GTOs and VR4s (side markers, LHD, ect.) really no difference. If someone who has a VR4 wants to call or badge it a GTO, then that is fine by me. Would people in Japan be upset if someone badged their GTO a VR4 ? doubt it.

Back to us here. GT2 for the GT4 body and swap is my vote. I don't think anyone here would badge GT4 on their US celica unless it had AWD.

I could see someone badging the GT4 on their celicas here. Not too many people really know what a GT4 is anyway. I bet alot of us could get away with doing it.
Rice. I see that the same as a "type R" badge on a civic that isn't

my st205 swapandour Beams swap
what if that civic already has a good swap though?
to me- people can badge thier cars whatever they want them to- but most car enthusiasts will know better... I think there are reasonable rebadging efforts, and then the not so reasonable. Good examples would be honda badges on a front end conversion integra, silvia badges on a 240 with a silvia conversion, skyline badges on a G35, that sort of thing. They keep in line with the cars original style and mechanicals. Bad examples include anything with a Type R without the proper engine from a REAL Type R, GT-R badging on anything Nissan, and so on. If it isnt possible to make your car 98% of what your claiming it is- its a fraud... just my 2 cents

Car #3: 98 Accord LX- purchased 5/06, totaled 8/06Car #2: 95 Celica GT- purchased 8/03, current daily driverCar #1: 01 Focus ZX3- purchased 5/01, sold 8/03
So would you consider it to be a fraud if you had a hatchback with GT-Four front, hood, projectors, risers, skirts, swap but 2wd?

I'm thinking BlackCelicaGT94 (I think her name is Natalie..?) would pass pretty convincingly if it was swapped and had the badges. But would you consider it fraud? I mean, the AWD is a pretty big thing, buts its the only thing missing..
ehh- its really not even a "homemade" GT4, so if it were me, id leave the badges off... Since the 4 in GT4 represents 4 wheel drive, id say yes- that isnt a GT4, so dont badge it as such

its a bastard child >smile.gif> a hybrid, a freak of nature, no longer just a GT or ST but not a GT4 either.

hybrid would be the most proper answer IMO but call it what you want its your car

Believer, you'll leave her, in leaving them allNo but I don't buy itLike anything you do, as anyone you areCause I'm...Ten Speed, of God's Blood & Burial
I think a
GT-R badge would be the most fitting for a 6gc GT with all the components of a GT4 minus the AWD

Basically the R would stand for Ralley - which is what the GTFOUR is best known for but thats just me.. would like to see someone hook up with a company that could produce a GT2 badge that lookd identical to the normal celica badges

Edit: BTW Toyota did make a GT-R badge for I belive the JDM 5th gen... I got two of em and there pretty cool looking but might be wrong about which celi they came off

Who really cares.... I'm more of a fan of taking off all the lettering and make sysboles... off the care.. and just have everyone guessing.... but thats just me...

ST205 has bigger brakes, superstrut suspension, a different gearbox, obviously different drivetrain and the fuel tank and stuff are shifted about to make way for the rear driveshaft and diff.

If I got a bath tub and dropped a LS1 in it, can I call it a Corvette?

I'm also a fan of the stealth mobile.

As for a 3S-GTE powered US spec celica - I like the term 'HalfTrac'

IMO Japanese names are the original names of cars and anything else they are called is just a distortion of the truth. Meaning RSX is Integra, TSX is Accord, Mirage was Lancer etc. Toyota doesnt seem to do this with their cars as they all seem to have the same names over in Japan, just pronounced differently.

If the car isnt a factory GT4 it'll never become one.

does that include the superstrut suspension, +fig 8 links then? lol

if that was done then course it would be a gt4 as thats wat they did with the cars in the first place anyway (btw it would have to have rev 3 engine)

gt2s are cool anyway. Why do you need awd in the us when all the roads are pretty much straight and 30 feet wide >smile.gif>

I say keep it a sleeper so noone knows. why do people advertise their stuff? it's just another quick way to get their car stolen. I especially like the people who put "rockford fosgate" stickers, etc... on their cars... when they aren't even sponsored to do so... that's just saying "rob me, puhleeeeze!"

No show, no tell. Let 'em figure it out >smile.gif>.

Heres some signs

I agree - nothing like having some ricer come up on you only to get they're arse handed to them by something they didnt see coming.
