Building custom boxes w/ fiberglass - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #15241 14 posts Started by acenova
HOw long would it take for me to build a custom shelf (not box) to replace the one in my hatch, about the same size, using fiberglass and plywood??? I guess I should ask if anyone's done it yet, but how long does fiberglass take to dry and what not, and is it really easy to work with or a B*&$H?!
It's kind of hard to work with at first, but you get the hang of it. I'm not sure what exactly you're planning on having your shelf be like, but it probably wouldn't be too hard.

You and Amy and Aaron should come up here sometime soon, and I'll show you what fiberglass is like to work with if you want. >smile.gif>

Oh, and lately it's been taking the fiberglass about 45 minutes to dry for me. It's really, really hot up here and I haven't been mixing the batches with less MEKP, so that's why it's so quick to dry right now. Ideally, it should take 2 hours for each layer of fiberglass to dry.

New Toyota project coming soon...
wow...nice man. maybe we'll have to take that trip. Definitely would like a lesson in fiberglass working. I have some plans for my next celi involving some of that so that'd be great. Thanks for the info.
fiberglass is easy to use , tip* spray wd-40 on ya gloves so the fiberglass dont stick to them

FG is easy to work with but the most important thing to remember is TAKE YOUR TIME, Don't rush.

i don't know why you want to use ply wood. FG is easy to work with once you realize what you're up against. I would recomment taking some chicken wire and make a basic shape. Fibre glass right over it untill you have your desired thickness. Sand and shape. Use a fine finishing putty to fill high and low spots. And paint.
IT TAKES A LONG TIME, If you want it right. wd-40 i never though of that, thanks. Its not a b$t@h, actualy kinda easy but time consuming.

my tips: get wood doweling (thin wood, looks like small pipeing) to make the shape you want, then cover it with cloth and fiberglass over that. Also make it thick and use planty of resin, the thicker it is the more you can sand, giving you plenty of room to get the exact shape and texture you want.
