TWM Short Shifter - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #14859 25 posts Started by ShadowFX
Does anyone have (prefereably close up) pics of a TWM short shifter? I'm pretty positive I'm getting one, just want to see how it looks. Also, I've been told that it will wear down the clutch faster than with the stock shifter? Is this true?
not true about wearing down clutch, It might screw with the syncros , but thats it.. an it shouldnt even do that.

a short shifter will make it possible to shift faster then normal...so if you pound through the gears all the time, the synchros wont have time to synch. its not the short shifters fault...its just all about your driving style.

ain't that a possibilty even with the stock shifter given taht you shift fast.......but i guess the short shifter makes the problem occur more rapidly because it already is shifting with less movement and if you shorten that further by speeding up your shifts it'll worsen the problem....that makes sense right.
you pretty much got it. I would like to know is it a common problem on celica or toyotas.. Cause everytime i shift it dosnt grind but it seems pretty tuff to put it in gear, like it takes a lil muscle, i mean not a ton or anything, but it seems like it should slip in a lil easier, think i should get some

Another question, installing the short shifter, does this make it easier or harder to shift gears? (in terms of force applied), because ive been told a few different things. oh, what is throw exactly? >confused.gif> thanks Sev, thats exactly what i wanted >smile.gif> how hard is it to install the short shifter? an afternoons work?

just put grease where they tell you, and put alot of grease on the ball part of the shifter, not so it pours out but work it around in the housing so it will move around easier. mine was stiff for a good hour but i sat at redlights with the clutch in and shifted 1 to 2 as fast as i could then back into 1 then to 2 (kinda like a beat off motion as fast as i could >biggrin.gif> ) and it worked the grease and what not into the joints. going into 5th is the only problem i have, its to far away so you have to push to far to get to it. since the shifter is shorter its more of a pain in the ass on my wrist since i have the leather covered armwrest.

theres the shifter throws with the twm shifter. its kinda ****ty photoshop but i was in a hurry and it gets the job done.

its in relation to neutral which is in the middle >rolleyes.gif> and you can see how far 5th is from the rest of the gears.

Ah alright, so what is meant by 60% less throw? also, does it make a difference whether my car is a LHD or RHD? Because in the product list, it lists LHD and RHD for 7th gen celicas, but not ours... last one - your all saying it takes a little more effort to put it into gear, they sell the short shifter with optional shift knob, like heavily weighted and everything, would this make it easier to shift?

any ideas on the LHD, RHD thing?

alright thanks, and what about the meaning of "60% less throw"?
throw is how far it is between shifts. like the distance you need to "throw" the shift knob between 1st and 2nd. so the distance is 60% less after you put on the short shifter.

Former: 96 GT 5 speed(i/p/e)Fate-rear ended by mack truck00 GTS 6 speed(i/ Bored TB 63mm - 68.5mm w/ butterfly/ Ported IM/ IMG/ PFC/ Commander/ datalogit/ Ported & heat wrapped Header/ Decat/ UEGO/)193FWHP 14.2(1/4mi) @98mph, 2.12 60ft (just intake, unbolted Exhaust, and gutted)Fate-side swipped by 18 wheeler at 75mph.Next: maybe an elise
ahhh alright, what about if i bought a heavier shift knob, would this ease shifts?
Short shifter and short THROW shifters are different. Short shifters are just shorter...the throw isnt shorter. Short throw shifters have a shorter throw and are usually shorter in height also.

All short throw shifters are going to be a little harder to shift because the pivoting point is brought up higher on the shifter which takes alittle more force to shift. They arent bad though. You will get used to it in no time.
but what about with a heavier shift knob? would this make it easier? hypothetically of course.. >biggrin.gif>
I guess it could. But its not really anything to worry about. You will feel the difference when you first drive it but you will get used to it so fast it will be all normal again.
so what exactly comes in the short throw kit?
