safe shifting limit - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #14540 23 posts Started by recneps
my kinda friend has a rsx type s (really suped up) anyways he burys the needle when racing past 9 grand.

and naturally i want to do this really bad but i was wondering what i would need to do to my car to make this safe?

i heard it was something about the ecu, i dont know.

anyways instead of asking him how he does it i thought id ask you guys what i would need to do to be able to bury my needle?

umm well depending on his peak horsepower burying the needle does nothing. hes just loosing peak power and faster acceleration. you shift just after your peak power as to keep pushing maximum power from your car. over reving does nothing but possibly cause damage to the life time of your motor.

hows it taste motha f*cka

but wouldnt you gain speed faster from 5800 to 7800 then shifting and being at 2000. and plus wouldnt after shifting at 7800 you start your next gear at a higher rpm and thus accelerating faster.

well looking at that statement i realize it would apply on a car by car basis.

anyways say i get my car dyno tuned and it says im still making pretty good power at 7800rpm, more power than i would be making at 3800rpms. what would i need to do to make it safe to shift at 7800 rpms.

anyways thanks for answering a stupid question. >biggrin.gif>

The torque-curve on the 5s drops off before the redline... It really would be pointless overrevving too much if you haven't done any further mods. I can't remember off hand but you are best off keeping the revs between 3k and about 5k.

I think you would probably run faster times shifting at 5.5k than 6k with a good clutch/flywheel.
if your driving a 95 st and racing what RPM do you usually shift at?
Recneps, not to put you down to hard or anything, but i think you got a lot more studying to do before you get on a strip or anything. Sounds like to me you have no idea what you're talking about or/and what to do when you get into a race. Don't race on the street either, i'm going to try encouraging that now beause of a stupid half-friend of mine that fliped his gsx 9 times through a highway median and bashed his head open. And if you want to know our personal hp peaks, mine is aroudn 5500, after i changed my plugs, wires, cap and rotor, air filter, and oil.

Its sort of like this:

Peak HP rpm on my Eclipse was 6250, even though redline was 7000. If I shift at exactly 6250, I'd hit a 'perfect shift' and the power curve would be great. Anything after 6250 is like letting off the gas pedal, hurts times and hurts engines.

To answer the other question. Think of a bicycle, like a 15 speed. It has 3 main gears.. Do you accelerate faster in 1st at top speed.... or 2nd gear. Sure your legs aren't moving as fast but the transmission of power is great and your bike will accelerate faster. In 1st, you can pump your legs like no other and get no where because once you hit the 'peak' your doing nothing but burning yourself out.

Your ST.... dunno... I have a GT. I wouldn't shift past 5400 though. That seems to be my power bend. Does anyone else have the same?

As for you racing... you gotta know that engine like your own hands. Release RPM, shift RPM, the clutch release point, the clutch pressure before burning, double clutching (if you racing with curves), power bend of the engine (like... you know your curve has massive power between 3000-4800... but peaks at 5400... try shifting at a lower rpm if your racing a car with top end {that was an example - i made up the #'s}).. and all kinds more stuff. Its not as simple as burning the clutch, lifting the front end of the car, spinning tires, and making smoke. However, if your friend is burying the needle, you probably can beat him with your ST if you learn how to drive right. Good luck and sorry for the long post.

EDIT: I didn't see that spunky typed his power peak - 5500. I said 5400 so, its probably right in between somewhere.

I tottaly understand everything that has been said about shifting and stuff. BUT what exactly is "burying the needle?" Something to with red lining it i take it.
first off you dont have a honda... as good as that sounds.. you wont be able to hit that thype of rpm.. hondas are made to reach max power at high rpms.. toyotas are just like small designed v8s power at low rpms.. your going to want to shift around 5800-6200 , depending how fast you can ****, you will still be in your power band, witch is the only reason to take into such high rpms.. toyotas have a lower rpm powerband .... so dont even think or try to take your car that high.. Also do alot of research before you even try to race or anything like that, cause otherwise your going to be like every other 16 y/o kid that gets a car an just drives like an ass.

spunky393 dont worry your not being hard. my last car was a 91 prelude auto and i just got my gt manual like a month ago so im really not familar with driving/ racing a manual.

and i do realize i have a lot to learn.

thanks for being helpful and not flaming.

no problem recneps, thanks for taking it well and good luck, always come back with your questions (Make sure you research the post(s) first).
