It also is grindin in reverse almost everytime i put it in. I'm tryin to avoid goin to the shop and gett screwed on princin for them to tell me it's nothin when i know it is. If you have any knowledge what so ever please help me out. Thanks!!!

If you're at a stoplight and you need to take off but the car just doesn't want to go into 1st here is what you can do. If it won't go into 1st gear don't shove it in to gear because you could really mess things up. When it doesn't go in just hold the shifter right there and don't move it back at all, just release the clutch a little and it will slide right in. Same thing goes for reverse as well. It works for me everytime. Reverse will still grind going in sometimes but it won't be as bad.

or you can also try reving up to about 1500rpm.. then relase the clutch and shift.. it should slid right in.. or you can also try puting her in 2nd first then back into frist before you take off

Try this.

With your car sitting at a stop, put the Ebrake up and hold the clutch in. Shift between 1st and 2nd real fast and hard. Sometimes your syncro's need to be broken in a little more. Thats how it was when I got the new Transmission for my GT-S, they said its the best thing to get everything to work smooth with no problems. Too be quite honest, it helps too if you always shift hard and miss a gear, that technique helps by working in that gear, and since i've done that, i've never missed a gear.
Jason, I'll try that later today, but I have a feeling my synchros are already pretty broken in/worn. >wink.gif>

And I've tried the second-first shift, but when I'm stopped and I can't get the car into first, I also can't get it into any other gears. >frown.gif>

I tried letting off the clutch a bit today too while trying to ease the shifter into first, but that didn't work either of the couple times that I tried it. >frown.gif>

This is my second dying transmission I've had to deal with in one year on my '94. My '88 Celica auto tranny is also dead, or close to it. I wish I could just bolt up a Honda tranny to my car. >tongue.gif>

Its probably your slave cylinder. Its probably shot and giving you no pressure for the Clutch. Have it looked at, its not expensive to get replaced, well it wasn't for me. But normally thats the reason why you can't get in gear. Does your clutch ever stick?
I usually don't have the first gear problem, but I do have the reverse one. I also have trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd from like 5600 in first. Is that just a worn clutch or a worn slave cylinder? It doesn't slip at all in gear.

I had a similar problem not too long ago. I had a hard time engaging 1st gear or reverse. My clutch did not slip, and is in decent shape. I was able to visually see the slave cylinder piston retract even though the clutch pedal was fully depressed. My master cylinder was the culprit; replaced it and bled the system and all is well.

See if you can get someone to help you with the clutch then do the quick visual inspection to rule out the hydraulic system.
What should I do and look for when inspecting the master and slave cylinders?

did you try what mac suggested? give it a bit of gas then clutch in/put it in gear? seems to work when it won't go into first.

and I agree about the C-52 trannies >frown.gif>

pennzoil synchromesh gear oil ! Mine was grinding when down shifting to 3rd and once i put this stuff in there it is fine through every gear. If you synchros are totally shot then not much you can do besides replace them. My celica has 158k on it and shifts excellent.
