Ok so I am not surprised that my car doesnt sound the greatest at idle. I dont know if this is all celi's, but its enough to make me kind of sad that such a beautiful and well running car doesnt have that quiet graceful idle that most cars have.
Is there anything I should check? It doesnt sound like blets but it also sounds like its coming from that little thing that has the hand off symbol with the belt next to it (is that timing belt?)
Any suggestions on gettin her to be a little more graceful at the idle?
Well, mine idles fine.. I would say depending on when you last had a nice tune up.. replace the plug's wires, cap, timing belt, oil filter, fuel filter.. alll of those should help.. the timing if it hasnt been replaced is a must.. other than that.. check your timing.. it might be off..
is it a chattering noise coming from the exhaust manifold?

My 5sfe does that too, but my car also burns oil, my guess is bad valve stem seals. The chattering could be due to bad valve guides, but to replace those you need a machine shop with a press. Unless the valve guides are so bad that they are causing damage to the valve it self or loss of compression it is not worth the money to get it fixed. My fix is I bought another 5sfe which is being shipped to my house. When I take my old engine out I'll take the head apart and let you know if I was right or not.
Do you get blue smoke the first time you start your car in a day?

aww thats sucks, you gotsta dud.... oh well runn it until it dies..
if its the thing with the hand sign on it, then try tighting the bults on that (its the head sheild) may help. other then that tighten down the header bults, my civic always had trubble with wiggling them lose, then it would clank and sould all wierd.

You can have a mechanic do a compression test, or just buy a kit your self. They are pretty cheap. If you fail that, it will be your rings, if not then its most likely in the head. If your coolant is clean, then it will be your valve guides. If you coolant is dirty or you need to keep filling it, then its the head gasket. After I get my engine out (whenever the new one gets here) I'll let you know what my problems were and what to look for to see if you have the same ones.
i need to replace my timing belt.. ne1 know roughly how much itll cost?
It only happens on start ups, not all start ups either, I guess just extended ones (overnight, school, etc)
its just one puff of smoke, I guess its blue, I mean, its not really white? However it looks like smoke, its not distinctivly BLUE.
Should I just take it to somewhere like Mr.Tire and ask them to do a compression test?
I remember when my aunt (shes nazi about used cars and checking fluids and I try not to say anything just let her do her thing) opened my coolant without letting it cool down, and it sprayed everywhere , and she said it looked really dirty, so maybe its the head gasket?

also this might be important but the sound has been around since I bought the car in march, but the smoke just started in the past month

this sucks, when i bought the car from the dealer i asked my step dad if it was sposed to sound like that (kind of chattery nothing to be disgruntled about just not that purrrrrrrrrrrrrr) and he said nope
I was even more of a n00b at the time, and now Im pissed that I bought this car because I paid 3750 for it , but it needed 500 dollars of body work to get it mint and now this, i take so much pride in my car and whne im leaving somewhere and it smokes up i just kind of blush and bury my head lol.
I should have found a better one BLAHHHH
also I just changed the oil to high mileage oil, not synthetic, and i put some engine restore in it 2 days ago.
Is it possible that that could fix it? IT just hasnt gotten through to it yet?
AFter how many miles of not notcing anything should I write it off as "not doing ****"

Hehe, my car does blue smoke too- I call it speed smoke! it roxors the hizzouse.
so how much does it cost to fix the valve seals?
if you can take the head off and take it to a machine shop they should be able to do it for a couple hundred. thats here in AK prolly cheaper where your at everything else is. well except if your in hawaii
THIS IS FOR BRIAN FORSTER fi ure celica still make that sound frome the handsingn thing try tightnigh the bolts on it my celica was makinge wierd sounds toward redline sorta like a vipration so i opened the hood and saw that a bolt was loos on the cover over the headers which is the handsoff sighn thing u talk about
