My A/V system in about a week.. - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #12587 24 posts Started by shid

Xenarc 700TSV touchscreen monitor- also hooked up will be an SNES with controllers rerouted to the centor console. Wireless keyboard- no need for a mouse (touchscreen..).

Putting the head unit where the quarter window and top controls are- moving THOSE under the dash whole.

The computer- a g4 550 mhz powerbook, is gonna be used for mp3s, NES, Genesis, and PS1 emulation- not to mention DVDs, divx (NARUTO!), etc etc etc. I plan to mount the computer sideways under my seat, so that I can change DVDs on it >smile.gif>

So... what do you guys think? Any comments? questions i need to think of? suggestions? etc etc?

Wow! thanks for the link drocay. All this stuff about powerbooks and touchscreens.. mmmm fun reading.

EDIT: after reading the forums for a bit it seems like I made the best choice- spending more money for a better screen. They've fixed the touchscreen problem and everything..

a g4 in your dash! you are officially my hero >smile.gif>

how are you molding the screen into your dash. I've done some research on this and might have some links that could help.
Ghost, thats one of the things I'm researching now- I would appreciate any links u could offer >smile.gif>
they layout you plan on your dash is identical to the one I have been planning

The rundown on difficulty I am expecting so far is this:

monitor fit @ old head unit area: EASY, This area just needs to be expanded in order to fit the screen. I'll know more when I have the unit in front of me, but I'm not expecting major hassles here, just cutting. Behind the unit there's ample space for the little over an inch depth required. Mountings going to be a pain- and will probably be accomplished by a strange assortment of mismatched L brackets and the like screwing into the old head unit screws.

head unit fit at old switch area: MEDIUM/HARD , a little sanding again; the most difficult part is going to be widening the SIDE of the console to make it fit.. if you look at the PS picture, it overlaps a little- most difficult part is going to be to GET RID OF THE STOCK AMP- which right now is blocking the head unit from fitting in depth wise- once thats gone tho, it'll fit easy. A small plastic piece might need to be affixed to the edge of the head unit to cover up a half centimeter hole- but thats it. Faceplate might even still be removable. Only downside being, CD's wont be able to be put into the unit when cars in park due to gearshift. I might change the gearshift later tho to a smaller one, so even that only problem disappears. Volume knob is still easily reachable too!

relocating convertible switches to under dash: Simple as HELL- the area around each switch comes out even.. we don't need to make new switches.. wires will need to be extended- only problem; and thats not too difficult.. right? >smile.gif>

Overall, I've heard of some people taking many many months to complete a system like this. Which strikes me as odd. I don't plan to take more than 3 days once all the parts arrive.
If you're doing custom fiberglass holdings or whatever...it may take longer...but I'm with you...as long as you actually have some kind of focus on the task u should finish within 3 or 4 days.

I hope you plan to mount that g4 powerbook solid, the stock harddrives in mac's don't like to be bounced around, and are very fragile. I've had to replace the drives in both my laptops. Just giving you a heads up on that. But the system will look amazing.
I'm mounting it under my seat to the seat- so however solid that is.. haha. and I won't be using the g4 iternal as my main drive- I'll be using an external firewire for that.. so the main one won't be accessed that many cycles per minute hopefully.
just listen for what i now call the "death click", your mac will make a slight clicking sound comming from the front of the case to the left of trac-pad, few days later you get the flashing question mark. Only thing i found that fixes it for more than a day or so is replacing the harddrive. But good luck.
I know the death click, it's happened on my IIsi, my 8600, and my G4

why not take the computer apart and relocate everthing into your glove box.. and take you moniter and take that apart also and just mold the casing into your dash then screw the screen back on..

Err, powerbooks are notorious for being hard to take apart etc- basically, removing 2 screws is the road to a dead computer
Have you considered a Mini ITX computer ? I guess its not worth considering if you already have a G4 you can use, but you can get a mini ITX for about 350-400 USD that runs on the 12 volt directly from the car.

What kinda screen are you going for ? Got a link ? I have been wondering about buying a Lilliput touch lcd for my car but it would be neat to hear from someone how has seen it (or any other screen) in action >smile.gif>
I also WANT a mac in my car >smile.gif> I'm buying it off my friend for 350-400 USD. haha. it has a boken screen- thats why.

It's a xenarc 700TSV http://www.onehitwonders.com/700tsvusb.html or http://www.xenarc.com/product/700ts.html

I have NOT seen the lilliput screens. I've seen the xenarc in action- it was sweet. The older models were said to have glare problems- but the one I saw had no such problems. The xenarc costs more money than the lilliput- supposidly because they use better screens (the lilliputs screens are recycled?)

Go to the link Drocay posted- its mostly about the lilliput and xenarc screens.
Nice >biggrin.gif> what are you planning on playing on the snes? lol!

Secret of mana?

Rock n' Roll Racing!?!

Illusion of gaia?

hehehe oh the memories...
Uhm, F-zero. DUH! hahaha
Fzero that was wicked game!!

damn you I have the theme music in my head now! (and even more lame, I can play the main riff on my guitar >biggrin.gif>) Gotta get the chrono trigger out as well!!

that is a sick monitor, I don't know about sticking the g4 under the seat though. Try to get something inside ur glove box, more accessible, less danger of being kicked. Yea, I hear the mac notebooks are very sensitive, and the hd crashes easily as well.

As for the snes games.... Mario Kart, baby.
contra. period.
