Does anyone know how to determine the type of A/C system used in a car? Specifically, how would I know if the system is R12 or R134a?

Its been a while since I was around someone doing AC work but IIRC the connectors are different. When I say connectors I mean the connectors that are used to charge the system. I think the r134a connectors are bigger and are incompatable with the r12 connectors. But like i said, its been a while. Any shop that does AC should be able to tell you.

My car says under the hood. There's a yellow sticker on the underside of the hood stating that the car uses R134a. >>

Thanks for the help guys. The reason why I'm asking is because instead of paying $150+ for a shop to recharge my system, I was going to try the recharge kit. I called my local dealer and they told me that my system is R12. I called EL Prototypes, and they told me that it should be R134a. I'll see if it says anything in my handbook. I asked him if the motor swap would have anything to do with my A/C. What he said was that they just used 5S parts...

recharge kit? im interested in that, i was gonna pay someone to recharge it....

I think r134 is the newest one, and almost all newer cars use the r134 system, and even if you have an r12 system you can drain it, and recharge and convert it to r134.
