MY SWAP IS DONE - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #11226 28 posts Started by Chrobis
Well my swap was finished a few days ago, after about a month and a half of waiting. I wish it worked though >frown.gif> there seems to be a problem somewhere. When ever the car starts to boost, maybe its caused by the boost, or when the car hits about 4k RPM, the throttle cuts. The check engine light comes on, then when the engine gos back to idle the check engine lights gos off. I didnt have a map sensor, so i thought that was the problem... the map was ordered and put in... same problem.

Anyone have any ideas on whats up!? I want to boost!
IGNITOR!

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
what about the igniter?
I used to have the same problem. It was that i was using the wrong ignitor. Get an MR2 turbo ignitor therse one on ebay right now, or an alltrac ignitor. Took 2 seconds to hook up and I got very happy happy.

Does it feel like a slow rev limiter? Like it wants to go higher but just cant?

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
umm, not really. it throttle cuts, and the throttle wont go back on until i let it go back down to idle...

go on aim.
cant @ work.

Do you have a boost controller? If you do, make sure u've disconnected the VSV, or else you'll reach boost cut once u boost over 12-13, which is what it sounds like.

What are you boosting? Have a boost gauge? If not get one ASAP.

no boost controller, or boost guage... how would i be boosting over boost cut.. its like 10 psi, and the map is what would cause boost cut.
Well first, get the boost gauge. Its a vital part and u can have a leak somewhere and thats whats causing it.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
well what igniter were you using?

cause I am using the Celica GT ignitor, and coil.
There's your problem. You're supposed to use the all-trac ignitor and coil.

didn't you buy a clip?

Wait a minute i said that in my first post! I cannot see how ur running ur car with that setup. The GT ignitor will start your car but will only rev u til 4K, but its like a rev limiter.

Also, the GT distributor is an internal coil, the ST185 is external. You need a seperate ignition coil that mounts to the firewall. Your car wont start if u are using a ST185 distributor w/o the coil.

well I am using the GT ignitor and coil, but qatar said its fine... the car does start with the 185 dist and the GT coil.
how sure are you that its the ignitor? cause omfg I'll kill mike if it is... I have the 185 ignitor but the plugs are slightly different, so i cant test it!
Take pics cuz what ur saying doesnt make sense. The GT coil will not work properly with your car, trust me i had it. It fixed my problem as soon as i put the MR2T igniter in.

Secondly, there is no GT coil. Its an INTERNAL coil. Its INSIDE the distributor. The ST185 ignition coil is NOT the ignitor. It is about the same size, but connects to the distributor cap.

Mike knows his stuff, idk why he's telling u this.

Talk to me on AIM, im going to go take pics.

I know this isn't going to help Chrobis' cause, buy I just wanted to say congrats on getting the swap done. >wink.gif>

I'm gonna be up in the bay for HIN in San Mateo and to visit my folks in the V. Lemme know if you wanna hook up bro. >tongue.gif>

Definitly want to hook up... I really wanted to see your car bro! Im not sure when HIN is in town though...

And by the way, I went and checked my engine code for the CEL and it is the ignition code, code 14, so it must be the igniter... although I now need to get the right connecter, either the one qatar took off, or one from a junk yard. So I want to say thanks to Super for your fast and very acurate help, and just to say I really love this community!
Definately get a boost controller man. and get a good one. Overbbosting is the major thing that could happen to you. I really think that you will be ok. Usually my mechanic when he does such swaps, he uses GReddy e-manage to set the whole thing because its very easy to program and basically controls everything.

Personally i dont know anything regarding the operations of the car. I just drive them. >wink.gif>
well overboost isnt a problem, because the map sensor is still there, thats its purpose. so when I have money though I will but a boost guage and controller, along with other guages.
might be a stupid question... what ecu are you using??? you must use a turbo-ecu to be able to run the engine properly!!!

You welcome man. Now lemme kno how it feels fully running, cuz since I fixed mine, I havent driven it yet. So IDK what a fully powered 3SGTE Celi feels like.

Overboost isnt going to be a factor on a stock engine. He still has his VSV hooked up, so any excess boost it'll go right through the wastegate.

IDK why Mike cut that piece off but I'd ask him for it. He probably has it lying around, hopefully.

MyFlickrMyeBay_Perpetual Aperture_
Well i confirmed it with my mechanic. he has done lots of swaps and he recomends the GReddy e-manage to use without changing the ECU. Furthermore this is an amazing product, its new tech, easy to program and has many other advantages. here is a link for the product and description
electronics

Just go to "Tuning" and then "Electronics" and then scroll down.
well once again at this point im pretty poor... and really its just the stock 3s-gte. The car it came from didnt have a boost guage or greddy e-manage system, boost controllers, and all that stuff. So I think i'll be fine until i start adding on. I Have my BOV, and the next thing im getting is the turbo timer, so piggy back ECU reprogrammers are pretty far down the list.
is that a Greddy BOV?

The stock 3s will be plenty of fun for you trust me...after a lil while tho u'll get the itch.

-Mikemjcoury@gmail.comTeam Reynolds StyleCelica BlogCelica WikiIt will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180 degree turn at speed, but you will be ready for it. Brace for the g's, and fast heel-toe work.
sorry mike, I thought you said it would work. But the coil does work, dont see why it wouldnt.
its an HKS old type BOV, titled simply the SQV, instead of the now SSQV.
