...There just has to be a way. I think if I was to attempt it (and if I had more money and didn't already have 2 cars I love I would) I would find a pos celica that was on its last leg and swap the vin numbers. Many people say this is impossible, its not. Its not easy and you have to be very careful to do it all correctly but it can be done. Once you have done this you have to register it in a state with really lenient laws on inspections and the like. One you've registered it and have a title for it, you're home free. Its not 100% legal but it can be done. Getting the car into the US in one piece is the hardest part. Once its cleared the port, you're home free. Someone will do it. Soon.
well, I do think its possible, but I don't think many people are willing to break the law to do so, but as I am not neccesarily a law abiding citizen, I am confident I could do it, just the way you said spedtoe, I'm just to poor to do it now.

There was an article in the current issue of HCI about a guy who bought an imported RHD Honda Integra XSi in SoCal, and lives in North Carolina.....He just said that he used a set of dealership plates that were at his disposal, because he either owned or worked at a body shop and had access to them.

I believe that thats what Truejigga had on that GT-4....I know he did, because somebody asked in his first thread why he had Georgia or Florida plates if the car was located in New York. Then he explained that his friend got him dealership tags to make it legal. Now, im not totally sure if anything else would need to be done, but i would think that you could find a way to get it on the street without much trouble if you did the reasearch. >wink.gif> Now if only i had 12 grand at my disposal....dammit. >frown.gif>

its funny because everyone always talks smack about how they will import a real gt4, but now that there is one here, no one is buying it.

i think that if you buy this car and spend some money to make it lhd, then stick plates/vin form your current celica, then no one would ever clue in that it was an import.

Making is LHD is very hard, and totally not worth it. My boss has a 2000 Austin Mini Cooper (not the BMW mini) that he imported from GB a couple years ago. Its RHD and I've driven it all over with no problems. Its much easier with minis because you just get the vin plates off an older one (in this case a '71) and put them on the new one. The body shells are essentially the same, so it would be difficult to argue that it wasn't really a '71). It might not be totally legal, but you're not gonna go to jail for it. The worst I can see happening is you lose the car, and something really really messed up would have to happen for that to even be a possibility. I really cannot believe that no one has bought this thing yet. I'm seriously considering taking out a loan.
i would be all over it if i didnt have my car.

i hate to bring this up, but there are PLENTY of people in this country who would like to import tons of different kinds of cars and drive them here, and there are also plenty of people with the money to do it, so if the system is beatable, wouldent you think you'd see, um lets say and EVO 5 or somthing driving around in LA or somthing? If you really could make a car that wasnt sold here legit, dont you think there would be a few rare cars, like skylines, evo's, the lotus elise, a handful of special 911's, and so on running around the country? This is why i dont think you can beat the system and make a GT4 street legal... just my opinion...

I dont get it guys.... If you want it to be able to drive, then get the damaged Celica GT with clear title, ge the VIN number plate, cut the number from the body of GT, then do the same with GT4, weld the body numbers from GT to GT4, put the GT VIN plate to the GT4, convert it to LHD repaint the engine bay and NO ONE WILL ever KNOW, cuz that car wount be stoled or anything... And to conver the car from RHD to LHD, its not that hard at all, my friend does this all the time, he just buy cars from GB imports them here, converts to LHD and sells them here. And its not that hard if you have parts, and in that case you will have GT standing next to your GT4...... i dont see much problems..... It wount be legal (but who cares, no one will now), and i dont think police in US actually offen checks the VIN number on the body and plates, and do the Cops know how have to look the reall GT or what engine should be itn that car??? Just my .2 cents....

hey,
guys let me say for the 100th time ..

anyone who buys this car will have to swap vins .. why?

well unless you can get Toyota to sign a letter saying it complies with all the DOT and NHTSA regs then you can forget about legally titling using the oem gt4 numbers .. speaking of which there is no US number system on GT4 so you could not use GT4 anyway without a new assigned vin ..

the kicker is Toyota will never I SAY NEVER give you the letter so forget about every getting full legal here .. even if you get title in a state with a lack DMV it will still never be fully legal ..

i am going to LHD (75% sure) and i will let you assume how i am getting titled..

I can tell you story of a guy who bought a 96 rhd mr2 that was shipped with my GT4 and he was all about going legal well guess what a month later he realizes vins swap is only way to do it .. DMV even told him that a RHD swap does not need dash vin they will just use vin sticker on 1/4 or door and firewall chassis number to verify ..

I am not saying do this but a vin swap done in a very proffesional way is not a big deal .. i know hot rods guys have been doing it for years swaping rusty bodies for clean ones..

derek -

Whats your point? Your post doesn't make any sense to me.
hey,
my POINT is everyone wants to do it full legal way but it will not happen unless MR T helps and they won't ever ..

guy even says swap vins which i can't believe he would say that on ebay..
calm down here

like 95 WRC said, the only way to legalize it is to swap vin numbers

i dont think converting to LHD is hard at all since you can just use US celica's interior and sawp it.

and i think most people wouldnt bother import a car is beacuse cars depreciates quickly. when you think of it not everyones into cars and not everyone knows about GT4. when it does comes to importing a car, most people would perfer more powerful cars such as skylines.

personally i wouldnt bid on this gt4 because it is not in good condition. it will be too costly to repair and its prob better to import one.

btw 95WRC, hows your gt4 coming?? how much did you spend on importing here again??

Just noticed he has it listed as a 1995 but the vin says 1998. The tail lights do belong to a 95 though. I wonder what year it really is.
