It is very rare that I hear a E153 break on the gear and not synchros or bearings. If your synchros were good, this is abuse or front jumping or bad shifting. A gear like that can surely hold 800-900h...

Gen 3 E153 got weak synchros on 1st and 4th, Gen 2 E153 got weak synchros on 2nd and 5th

If you have some CO2 try to freeze the pliers as they will shrink (with a small flexible hose)
It is very useful with bolts so maybe with that too
