the 1980 was just an example....... my point is this.... unless you're in california where the emissions are stiffer than a (well, lets not go there).... then you *might* run into some problems... but...

JDM motors are NOT illegal..... good lord people...... the only thing that isn't legal is to have a car that doesn't pass emissions for it's respective year.... put a silvertop 20V into a 1980 corolla...

unless your state does inspections..... they'll never ask..... and it's not like you can't go to a junkyard and find the EGR manifolds and EGR stuff.....

best way to do it on a FWD A series motor.... is to move the battery to the trunk (which helps with front/rear weight ratio) and to use a 2.5" mandrel bent tubing and send the filter into the fender.....

my 4a-fe would hit the fuel cut at 6200 rpm's... racer25, with a modified ecu, has taken his 7a-fe up to 8,000 rpm's and the valves started to float... these are non-interference motors
