Your ECU controls the alternator's internal voltage regulator. If anything is to happen you will see it fast and react accordingly, instead of driving for an unknown period with a bad charging system....

You got a bunch of wires in the kick panel, for the doors and what not. I am pretty sure there is power.

Run a single wire from your battery. Your chassis will be the ground.
I don't see why you would need the power to go and off with the car. It's a socket after all.
Wouldn't hurt to fuse the wire too.
