Overview
ECU reset (also known as AFR reset) is a simple procedure that clears the ECU's learned parameters and allows it to relearn optimal air/fuel ratios. This is essential after installing performance modifications or when experiencing idle issues.
🕒 Time Required: 10-15 minutes
💰 Cost: Free
🔧 Tools: Needle-nose pliers only
When to Perform an ECU Reset
Performance Issues
- Rough idling
- Very low RPM idle
- Awkward running behavior
- Poor fuel economy
After Modifications
- Cold air intake installation
- Header/exhaust system changes
- Any engine modifications
- Fuel system upgrades
Step 1: Warm Up Engine
Start your car and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. This ensures the ECU has recent data to clear. Once warmed up, turn the engine off and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
Step 2: Locate and Remove Fuses
Pop the hood and locate the relay/fuse box. Remove the cover and identify the following three fuses:
- Hazard fuse
- EFI fuse (Electronic Fuel Injection)
- ECU fuse (Engine Control Unit)
Use needle-nose pliers to carefully remove all three fuses. Set them aside in a safe place.
Step 3: Wait and Reinstall
Leave the fuses out for exactly 1 minute. This allows the ECU's capacitors to discharge and clears the stored parameters. After one minute, reinstall all three fuses in their original positions.
Step 4: Relearning Process
Start the engine. The ECU is now in relearning mode and will begin adapting to your current setup:
- Let the engine run for exactly 10 minutes without driving
- Turn the engine off
- Wait 30 seconds, then restart the engine
- You should notice improved idle quality immediately
🎯 Expected Results
Immediate Benefits
- Improved idle stability
- Better throttle response
- Smoother engine operation
- Proper RPM idle speed
Long-term Improvements
- Better fuel economy
- Optimized performance from mods
- Reduced emissions
- Enhanced engine longevity
💡 Important Notes
- No harm done: This procedure cannot damage your vehicle
- Not a cure-all: May not solve mechanical problems, only ECU learning issues
- Driving behavior: Drive normally after reset - ECU learns from your driving patterns
- Frequency: Perform after any engine modifications for best results
- Patience required: Full relearning process takes several drive cycles
